A display system (10) comprising a display device (12) operable to display an image, a first optical device (14) positioned to receive light from the image displayed on the display device and reflect the light, and a second optical device (16) positioned to receive light reflected by the first optical device and reflect the light back towards the first optical device. The first optical device comprises at least one holographic diffraction element positioned such that light received from the display device is received at an angle that satisfies the Bragg diffraction condition and is reflected by the first optical device and light received from the second optical device is received at an angle that does not satisfy the Bragg diffraction condition and is transmitted through the first optical device.
