A battery pack (10) includes a DC to DC converter (16) and a group (14) of at least one primary cell coupled to the DC-DC converter. The battery pack (10) also includes a charge inhibiting circuit (20, 21) that prevents a charging current fed to the battery pack (10) from charging the group (14) of at least one primary cell. The charge inhibiting circuit (20, 21) includes a switch (20) disposed in a path between the group (14) of at least one primary cell and the DC-DC converter (16). The switch (20) opens when a charging current is fed to the battery pack. The charge inhibiting circuit (20, 21) includes a charge detector circuit (24) that senses a reverse current flow indicating a charging current.
