[Also in Divisions C3, C4 and D1] The invention comprises compounds of the formula wherein R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are hydrogen or halogen or C 1-12 alkyl or alkoxy groups, R 4 is hydrogen or a C 1-4 alkyl group, X is an alkoxy group or disubstituted amino group in which the substituents are alkyl, aryl or aralkyl radicals or together form a heterocyclic ring, and A is the residue of a mono- or poly-nuclear aromatic ring system, which may be substituted. The compounds are prepared by reacting a compound of the formula with an acylating derivative of carbonic acid or N,N-disubstituted carbamoyl chlorides. Examples relate to benzo- and naphtho-triazolylcarbostyril derivatives. The novel compounds are employed as optical brighteners (see Divisions C3 and D1). The starting carbostyrils of the above formula are prepared by cyclization of oaminoazo compounds obtained by coupling the appropriate primary aromatic amine with the diazonium salt of a 7-amino-carbostyril of the formula |
