Ring seal in vehicle clutch

The seal is for a ring piston in a vehicle clutch assembly. It consists of a plastics ring with a broad thick Y-shaped cross-section, with a flat base (18a) and a broad flat top (14,15) separated into inner and outer portions by a triangular-section groove (16) near the centre of the top surface. The sides of the base of the Y-shape are extended to form a J-shape embracing a J-shaped metal ring (19,20) with an inward projection (25) in the long arm of the J-shape forming a retaining groove. The inner portion of the top surface is slightly narrower than the outer portion and is at a small distance (x) above the level of the broader portion. The sides near the base are at right-angles to the plane of the base and slope outwards further up. The top portions of the sides are at right-angles to the plane of the base and may seal against inner and outer rotating members.
