The tensioning device (1) has a tensioning roller which is spring loaded against the belt drive and which rotates relative to an eccentric (5), concentrically enclosing a support pin (2a), for limited pivot movement relative to the latter. The support pin has a non-cylindrical mantle surface defining one or edges (16) supporting the eccentric in a direction which is opposite to the radial force (F) exerted by the belt drive.
