The tensioning device has a tensioning element (4) acting on the endless drive belt, in response to a dynamically controlled actuator (8), coupled to a control device (10) receiving a number of monitored parameters (M1-Mn), e.g. engine operating parameters in the case of an engine cambelt chain (3). An Independent claim for a control method for operating an endless drive belt tensioning device is also included.
