Esp. profiled bars are produced to specification from blooms in a sequence which is controlled by (a) calculating means storing signals which indicate the operations to execute on each workpiece at the respective stations as they pass through the sequence, (b) means detecting entry of a given workpiece into the sequence, (c) means detecting a workpiece passing through the sequence and following it through the sequence so that the pos'n of each workpiece is known after entry into the sequence and (d) a device in the calculating means to modify the operation executed at a station according to signals stored in the calculator.
