In the present invention there is disclosed absorption article (10) absorbent member being particularly suitable for absorption and retention of aqueous body having a peripheral region and a deposition region contiguous with said peripheral region and laterally surrounded by said peripheral region. The invented absorbent member comprises at least one layer (10, 110, 120, 130) of absorbent material which, upon contact with aqueous body fluids, expands and absorbs said aqueous body fluids, said absorbent material contains a compressible polymeric foam material (115) with a hydrophilic, flexible structure of interconnected open spaces. This layer (10, 110, 120, 130) having an upper surface (11) and a lower surface (12), said upper surface (11) and said lower surface (12) defining a planar direction and a normal direction perpendicular to said planar direction, said absorbent material being expandable in at least one direction within said planar direction in response to absorption of said aqueous body fluid into said interconnected open spaces. The absorbent member according to the present invention is characterized in that it has at least one slitted region (20) comprising at least one slit (30) extending at least partially through said absorbent material layer (10, 110, 120, 130) thickness, whereby the slit (30) comprises at least two slit surfaces (31, 32) which are displaceable with respect to one another when said aqueous body fluid is introduced into said deposition region and absorbed into said interconnected open spaces such that said slit (30) opens and exposes said slit surfaces (31, 32), the displacement of said slit surfaces (31, 32) being substantially reversible when said aqueous body fluid is removed from said interconnected open spaces and said absorbent material returns to an unexpanded state, whereby the polymeric foam material (115) is comprised in the absorbent material in collapsed state.
