The invention relates to a method for cleaning a heat exchanger surface that is exposed to hot gas containing fine dust. The heat exchanger surface is continuously or intermittently subjected to the action of a solid blasting medium. According to the invention, the coarse ash that is produced when sludge is burnt in a furnace and separated from the flue gas by coarse dust removal is used as the solid blast medium in order to reduce erosion. Alternatively, a manmade solid resembling the coarse ash can be used.
