A procedure for the monitoring and switching off of cooking plates on electric ovens has the allowed switch-on time of the cooking point chosen to be so short that an effective protection of the crockery heated on it is guaranteed. The expiring allowed switch-on time is reset by direct or indirect changes of adjustment on the oven. The allowed switch-on time is different from cooking plate to cooking plate or is identical for all cooking plates. The allowed switch-on time can be influenced via a logic circuit after a reset or is a once-fixed time. The allowed switch-on time is influenced by the adjusted heating temperature.
