Sudden, unintentional, acceleration of a vehicle having an automatic transmission is prevented by detecting the sudden acceleration of the engine, applying the vehicle brakes 80 by actuating electric motor M and cutting the electrical supply 70 to the engine. The system detects input of start key 20, engine rpm 30, transmission state (P, N, D, or R) 40, and accelerator pedal position 50. Sudden acceleration is determined to occur after inputting a start key, if the rpm abruptly increases (to > 4200 rpm) within a first reference time when the transmission is in P or N and the accelerator pedal output is less than a predetermined level. In addition, the controller determines that sudden acceleration occurs if the transmission state changes to a driving state (D or R) and the rpm abruptly increases within a second reference time. The controller may be the central processor unit in an engine control unit of the vehicle.
|
