Process for desulfurizing and removing nitrogen from steel melts comprises partially mixing a melt in a pan with a desulfurizing agent in the region of the outlet site to a vacuum vessel; feeding into a vacuum vessel to remove nitrogen; returning to the pan; and treating with the desulfurizing agent again. Preferred Features: The steel is decarburized in a vacuum and de-oxidized. A powered desulfurizing agent is blown into the pan melt.
