In a process to manufacture a collagen sponge the raw material is treated, shredded and suspended to form a suspension (2) which is de-gassed and dispensed into a dish (8) mould and freeze-dried. The suspension (2) is dispensed onto the dish (8) base as a layer (12) through an tool (5) with a longitudinal slit (7). The dish is essentially filled by the layer (12). The dish (8) is essentially rectangular and of the same width as the slit (7). The process can also be employed in conjunction with an enclosed piece of apparatus. The layer of collagen sponge suspension is released by a height adjustable tool at between 0.01 and 20 mm above the dish or form base. The dish or form is moved under the discharging sponge at the same speed as the discharging sponge.
