The unit has at least one light strip (14,15) formed from a sequence of white or colored light diodes, extending along the length of the escalator (1). The light strip is preferably formed from a number of electrically-connected plates each with light diodes. The plates may be plugged or welded together. Alternatively, the light diodes may be arranged on a flexible electrically-conducting band.
