The seal testing method uses a pressure source for subjecting the automobile fuel tank system and a parallel leak of defined size to a varying pressure, with detection of at least one corresponding operating characteristic for the pressure source, for comparison of the characteristic values for indication of a leak in the fuel tank system. When a leak is indicated the pressure is re-applied to the fuel tank system and a new reference measurement is obtained, with the leakage signal supplied when the fuel tank system measurement differs from the new reference measurement.
