The air filter has a filter element made from a panel of a fibre-based material with pleats (20) forming a central filter zone, and a peripheral strip with a fold (42) giving it a reinforced section with two edges (41, 43c, 43d) at an angle to one another. The peripheral strip is shaped to engage with the sides of a recess in a filter holder set in the air circuit so that the pressure differential between the faces of the filter presses it against the holder. A variant of the design can have the peripheral strip reinforced by an extra layer of material of the type used for the filter.
