The control method detects a given operating condition of the i.c. engine (1), for initiating at least one of 2 different test modes, used respectively for determining correction values for each of the 2 high pressure fuel pumps (2,3), supplying fuel to a pair of high pressure fuel rails (7,8), with subsequent adaption of the fuel pump control in dependence on the obtained correction values.
