PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce steel of a componential system good in cold workability after softening and also capable of obtaining good surface hardness even by nitriding hardening at the time of final hardening heat treatment after cold working in SUS410 series martensitic stainless steel. SOLUTION: This steel has a composition containing 0.10 to 0.12% C,<=0.2% Si, <=0.6% Mn, <=0.3% Ni, 11 to 13% C and <=0.025% N, in which A=2330C +270Mn+33Cr+260N-110 is also >=620, and the balance Fe with impurities. The cold workability at the time of working a product such as a screw and a pin by cold forging or the like is good, and in hardening heat treatment after the working, good surface hardness can be obtained not only by ordinary hardening by simple martensitic transformation but also by nitriding hardening.
