PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem of a conventional video output device and a video display device where the format of a video signal which is compatible with and optimal to both devices is not automatically selected, in the case that the video output device and the video display device that are compatible with multi- formats are connected. SOLUTION: A display state discriminating circuit 12 discriminates whether an output video control signal 23 outputted from a video output device 1 can be displayed on a video display device 2 and provides the output of the discrimination result as a display state signals 25. A priority setting circuit 5 obtains the priority of a signal format on the output video signal 23 on the basis of the signal format of an original video signal 20. An output control circuit 6 keeps a present signal format, when the display state signal 25 indicates a display enable state and selects the signal format according to the priority obtained by the priority setting circuit 5, when the display state signal 25 indicates a display disabled state. A signal format conversion circuit 4 converts the signal format of the original video signal 20 into the signal format designated by the output control circuit 6 to obtain the output video signal 23.
