PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of judging a document area even under the influence of disturbing light. SOLUTION: In a state where a platen cover with which the surface of a platen is covered is opened and a document is not placed on the platen, this image reader detects disturbance light entering the platen, obtains the area of the diffused external light in the platen based on the result of the detection of the disturbance light, and divides an area outside of the disturbance light in the platen based on the area of the disturbance light. In a state where the platen cover is opened and the document is placed on the platen, this image reader executes reading, obtains a partial document area by each area outside of the disturbance light divided based on read information and judges the document area in the platen based on the partial document area.
