PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic shock absorber, capable of effectively reducing wide vibrations including high-frequency vibration. SOLUTION: A cylinder 2 filled with operating liquid and a piston rod 4 to be retractably projected through a rod guide 3 provided on the end of the cylinder 2, are provided. A friction member 17 for providing the frictional resistance to the inserting/retracting operation of the piston rod 4 is provided between the rod guide 3 and the piston rod 4. The friction member 17 is energized axially in relation to the rod guide 3, by a spring member 20 made of a material of high rigidity.
