PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a member having a sliding surface which has satisfactory seizure resistance and allows easy flow of a lubricant. SOLUTION: This sliding surface 10a of the member 10 is formed with undulations 16, composed of recessed parts 12 and projecting parts 14. This undulation 16 measures from 0.25μm to less than 1.2μm in average irregularities in height, form 20μm to less than 130μm in average irregularity pitch, and less than 5μm in pointedness, when measuring 4 mm in reference length. Suitable examples of the member 10 include an internal combustion engine cam shaft and an internal combustion engine balancer shaft which are made of heated and cooled nodular graphite cast iron, and their journals serve as the sliding surfaces 10a.
