PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To restart a gas exchange valve at a stop as early as possible during continuous operation when the solenoid operative gas exchange valve for a piston type internal combustion engine stops functioning. SOLUTION: The piston type internal combustion engine is provided with solenoid valve systems 71, 72 for operating a gas exchange valve 5. Each valve system is provided with an armature 10 movable between two electromagnets 8, 9 against the force of a return spring and connected to the gas exchange valve 5, and the valve system can be completely and variably controlled through an electronic engine control device 11. In a method of operating the piston type internal combustion engine, the function of the solenoid valve system of each cylinder 1 is detected by the engine control device 11, and when the function stop of the solenoid valve system of one cylinder is recognized, a stop current for bringing the armature 10 into an end position on the electromagnet is supplied to the electromagnets of the solenoid valve system, and the solenoid valve system is controlled in action from this end position for the continuous operating cycle of the cylinder.
