[Also in Division H1] A battery plate grid is made by forming from synthetic plastics material (e.g. P.V.C.) a grid comprising a generally rectangular frame with an integral interconnecting mesh framework and a lug-receiving portion adjacent the periphery of the frame, engaging a lug made of lead in a correspondingly shaped recess in the lug-receiving portion and deforming at least part of the lug-receiving portion to trap the lug in said recess. Preferably the plastics material is deformed by ultrasonic heating. As shown, the grid 11 comprises a rectangular frame 12 with diagonal cross members 13, 14 integral with the frame. The terminal-receiving portions 15 comprises a U-shaped rib 16 surrounding a recess 16a, the lug having curved portion 19a in its sides, and pins 21 projecting from the base of the recess. The grid is preferably made by casting. The lug 22 is shaped to correspond with recess 16a and has holes 23 for the pins 21. The edges of the rib 16 and the ends of the pins 21 are turned over to hold the lug 22 in place. In alternative embodiments either the pins 21 and corresponding holes 23 or the rib 16 may be dispensed with. |
