The plate has a hardened top layer (3) and a relatively soft base (2). A rectangular lattice of grooves (5) is cut in the top plate, dividing it into segments (6), before it is hardened. Alternatively, stamped segments may be spot-welded to each other through the base layer. The grooves may extend into the base and could be V or trapezium-shaped in section.
