PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate a reduced image as soon as recording data resulting from compression-coding a dynamic image onto a recording medium. SOLUTION: An image signal photographed by an image pickup device 1 is digitized, a compressor 3 applies compression-coding to the digital image signal, and a writer 4 records a coded bit stream to a recording medium 5. As soon as compression coding and recording processing are applied to the received image, a compression controller 6 accesses a frame memory in the compressor 3, detects a change in the received image, generates a reduced image from the received image with the change and stores the reduced image to a memory area reserved in the frame memory. At the end of photographing, the reduced image is compression-coded. The recording medium 5 records the reduced image data that are compression-coded. The generation, coding and recording processing of the reduced image are conducted automatically.
