PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium having a thin film magnetic layer formed on a substrate excellent in practical characteristics, e.g. running properties, durability, preservation properties, the dirt preventing properties of a head at the time of running, the preventing properties of the generation of guide dirt, etc. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium having at least two layers wherein a lower layer is formed by applying a non-magnetic paint obtained by dispersing at least non-magnetic powder and a bonding agent having a polar group on a substrate and, after the lower layer is dried or during the lower layer is wet, a magnetic layer is formed by applying a magnetic paint obtained by dispersing at least ferromagnetic metal powder consisting essentially of iron and a bonding agent on the lower layer is characterized in that the ferromagnetic metal powder supplied to the dispersion contains iron ions for forming a complex with benzohydroxamic acid in a mass ratio to the ferromagnetic metal powder of 0-10 ppm and the non-magnetic powder used for the lower layer is surface-modified αFe2O3 powder which is surface-treated with oxides and/or hydroxides of Al and Zn. |
