PARA-ORIENTED ARAMIDE FIBER PAPER AND METHOD OF PRODUCING THE SAME

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide p-oriented aramide fiber paper by bonding and reinforcing the web only made of Na ion-containing poly(p-oriented aramide) fibers with a synthetic binder prepared by allowing an epoxy resin to react with an amine and neutralizing the reaction mixture with a volatile acid. SOLUTION: The aramide polymer is dissolved in conc. sulfuric acid, the dope is wet-spun, neutralized with a caustic soda solution to form partially sulfonated p-oriented aramide fibers. In these p-oriented aramide fibers, the staple fibers with thickness of 0.5-5 deniers and length of 1 mm-20 mm and fibrillated fibers with a diameter of <=5μm are used to form web sheets. The resultant web sheets are bonded with a binder that is prepared by allowing an epoxy resin to react with an amine and adding a volatile acid to the reaction mixture to make the mixture dispersible or dissoluble in water. The bonded webs is dried and hardened, then washed with pure water or ion-exchanged water with a conductivity of <=1×S/cm.
