PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a press starting point detecting method capable of detecting a press starting point on the spot with a high accuracy and a hardness testing device employing the method. SOLUTION: An indenter is moved to a pressing position a state that a sample is not set (step S1), and a change of position according to a time is expressed in a formula to obtain an initial formula (step S2 and step S3). The sample is set an the indenter is moved toward the sample, and the change of the position according to a time is expressed in a formula comparing with the initial formula (step S4-step S6). Then, a point where these formulas start showing difference is detected as a press starting point of the indenter (step S7 and step S8).
