[Also in Divisions B1 and H1] A method of separating one constituent of a gaseous mixture which has resulted from a chemical reaction from a second constituent thereof, comprises supplying the mixture to a liquid ring pump (described in Specification 1,223,610 as having a rotor supporting a number of vanes, disposed in a housing thereby to define a plurality of chambers between the housing and rotor for receiving pump liquid, and first discharge means at the housing wall, and second discharge means at the rotor) having a pump liquid not capable of absorbing the said one constituent, but capable of absorbing the second constituent, ejecting the first constituent from the pump via the second discharge means thereof, thus affecting separation, and then desorbing the second constituent from the pump liquid and returning the regenerated pump liquid to the pump. With reference to Fig. 2, in the specific disclosure, hydrogen and carbon dioxide, produced by the catalytic reaction in vessel 15 between methanol and water which have been evaporated in a heat exchanger evaporator 14, are passed via pipe 16 and heat exchanger 14, to the liquid ring pump 17, where the carbon dioxide is absorbed in aqueous potassium dimethylamino-acetate, to form potassium hydrogen carbonate and dimethylamino-acetic acid. Hydrogen is released and may be used to feed a fuel cell 34 (Fig. 3, not shown), for heating purposes. The CO 2 containing pump liquid passes via pipe 19 and a preheater 20, to a regeneration vessel 21, heated by a heating circuit 27, 28, 29. Here, CO 2 is evolved, together with some steam, both of which pass up pipe 23 to heat exchanger 14 where the pump water is condensed and passes back to pump 17 via a valve 25 and pipe 26, and CO 2 is emitted at 24. The regenerated pump liquid leaves the regenerator 21 by pipe 22 and is also returned to pump 17 via the heat exchanger 14, where it is cooled. A heating means 28 and heating circuit 27, using a heating medium of "Diphyl" (Registered Trade Mark), is incorporated to provide heat for the reactor 15 and the regenerator 21.
