PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital data storage sub-system including a directory for efficiently providing format information related with records stored by the digital data storage sub-system. SOLUTION: In this digital data storage system equipped with a large capacity sub-system for storing information in one or more disk storage devices, a storage device element constitutes tracks on the disk storage device, and each track stores plural records. Each track is related with a describer. At the time of retrieving the contents of the records, the controller decides a format definition type related with the tracks by using the format definition type identifier of the describer related with the tracks, and decides the place and size of the records on the track by using the specific format information, and retrieves the records.
