PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem in which color difference signals Cr and Cb are reduced in color resolution to a level as low as a horizontal four-repetition coding (that is, 1/2) in a horizontal direction as compared with a usual horizontal two-repetition coding in a gridiron layout complementary color coding. SOLUTION: Two adjacent rows of sensors 11 out of pixels (sensors 11) in a direction in which rows extend are considered as a unit, the signal charge of pixels that belong to the above adjacent rows is read out by a row unit to a vertical CCD 12 located on the same side, and two adjacent rows of sensors 11 in a row direction are considered as a unit, the signal charge of pixels that belong to the above adjacent rows is read out by a row unit to a vertical CCD 12 located on the opposite side, and the signal charge of the vertical two pixels and the signal charge of oblique two pixels of the vertical CCDs 12 are added together.
