PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium excellent in friction characteristic and durability. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording medium is constituted so that a magnetic layer which contains at least magnetic powder and a binder and has 0.15μm or thinner thickness is formed on a nonmagnetic support, a hard carbon film having 5-30 nm thickness is formed on the magnetic layer and a lubricating layer is formed on the hard carbon film. It is preferable that the hard carbon film is formed by a plasma CVD method, the magnetic layer does not contain a lubricating agent, this magnetic recording medium is used in combination with a MR head and the hard carbon film is formed after the low molecular weight component in the magnetic layer is reduced.
