PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a drive method, capable of performing an output whose S/N ratio is high in the case of performing driving in low resolution, with respect to high resolution in a solid-state image pickup device obtained by arranging a plurality of sensor strings in parallel. SOLUTION: This drive method is for a solid-state image pickup device which is provided with a 1st sensor string 1, where a plurality of sensors 10 are arranged at a prescribed pitch and a 2nd sensor string 2 where a plurality of sensors 20 are arranged at the same pitch and arranges the strings 1 and 2 in parallel, while the respective sensors 10 and 20 are disposed adjacent to each other and also shifted by half of a pitch, and adds and outputs a charge taken in by the sensors 10 of the string 1 and a charge taken in the sensors 20 of the string 2.
