PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the durability of a surface protective layer having a charge injection layer on the surface of an image carrier and to uniformly electrify the image carrier without irregular electrification. SOLUTION: The surface protective layer of a photoreceptor drum 1 is made to have the structure of diamond state carbon or amorphous carbon incorporating hydrogen so as to improve the wear resistance of the surface protective layer. In a state where magnetic particles 23 being an electrifying member are brought into contact with the surface protective layer, voltage is applied to an electrifying sleeve 21 from a power source 10, so that the drum 1 is injection-electrified. The average particle diameter of the magnetic particles 23 for electrification is set to 20 to 150μm. By such constitution, the charge imparted to the surface protective layer is properly diffused and the dispersion of a potential difference between the particles 23 and the drum 1 gets small, so that an excellent image having no irregularity is obtained.
