PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cooling device for ice making and a method of operating the device to simplify maintenance, excellently separate water from ice, and improve ice making capacity. SOLUTION: A cooler through which water or low density brine passes and which generates ice water forms an evaporator 5. The evaporator 5, a condenser 6, and a compressor 7 are interconnected to form a refrigerating cycle 1 and a heat storage tank 3 to store ice water is provided. The cooler 5 and the heat storage tank 3 are interconnected through ice water flow passages 4 and 4' having a pump and effecting circulation. In a so formed cooling device for ice making, an ice separator 9 is situated in the ice water flow passage in the ice water flow passage. A flow passage through which water or the low density brine separated by the ice separator 9 is fed to the cooler 5 and a flow passage to return separated ice in the heat storage tank 3 are provided. The ice separator 9 is provided with a rotary filter cylinder 10. A washing brush 11 is attached to the internal part of the cylinder and an ice-removing device 12 to the external part thereof. Further, the ice separator is not operated when the temperature of a flow passage for ice water exceeds an ice point.
