An improved process for the manufacture of carbon

In a process for the catalytic formation of carbon from carbon monoxide wherein the carbon dioxide formed is reconverted to monoxide by passage through heated coke &c. in a converter, the gases moving in a closed circuit, losses due to leakage &c. are made up by burning the monoxide formed during the blowing period, heat being recovered by passing the gases through a waste heat boiler and the carbon dioxide formed being separated from the diluting gases by solution in an alkali, such as aqueous ammonia, or in water under pressure. During the blowing period, air is forced by a fan 17 into the producer 1 through a valve 16 and the gases formed are passed by a pipe 31 through a furnace 30 to which air is supplied by a pipe 25, valves 16, 15, 18, 33 being open and valves 21, 12, 13, 14 closed. From the burner, the gases pass through a waste heat boiler 32 and a dust remover 45 into a chamber 34 containing the absorbent solution, waste gases leaving by a pipe 35 and the solution passing to a distillation apparatus 36 heated by steam from the boiler 32. From the still 36, the carbon dioxide is led to a gas holder 37 connected by a pipe 22 with a gas holder 9, the rise and fall of which may control a valve 38 in the pipe 22. During the reduction period, valves 21 and 12, 15 or 13, 14 are open and 16, 33, 18 closed, the carbon monoxide passing through the furnace 30 without burning, through a dust remover 2, a gas holder 3, a compresser 4, washers 5, a catalytic apparatus 6, a collecting chamber 7, a pressure reducing valve 8, gas holder 9 and a fan 10 to the producer 1. Scouring of the producer 1 between the blowing and reduction periods may be effected by supplying steam by a valved pipe 23, or gas from the holder 37 to the blower 10 through a valve 39 in a pipe 22a, a valve 40 being closed; the scouring gases are passed through the burner 30.
