Because of having an elastase inhibitory effect, compounds represented by general formula (I) are useful in treating and/or preventing diseases caused by the decomposition of elastin by elastase, the decomposition of collagen fiber and/or abnormal acceleration of proteoglycan decomposition, for example, pulmonary emphysema, rheumatoid arthritis, atherosclerosis, adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), myocardial infarct, ulcerative colitis and peridontal ligament disease.
