A container (1) for containing a liquid (2) has a single opening (3) through which extends a porous wick (4). The wick (4) extends into the liquid (2). A portion of the wick out of the container (1) extends through a tubular shiel d (8) and a generally annular electric heater (9). The heater (9) is movable between the first position where the shield (8) is disposed between the heat er and the wick, and a second position where the shield is not so disposed, so as to enable the supply of heat from the heater to the wick to be regulated.</S DOAB>
