A method for pre-treating metal surfaces, comprising the following steps: a) layer-building phosphatation, b) rinsing and c) cathodic electrophoretic enamelling. In step b) rinsing is carried out with an aqueous solution containing 0.001 - 10g/l of one or several cations of lithium, copper or silver, in addition to a substance which is known to be an accelerator in phosphatation . The cathodic electrophoretic enamelling in step c) can be carried out with a standard lead-containing enamel or with a modern lead-free cathodically depositable electrophoretic enamel without any loss in quality.
