A roller for applying heat and mechanical action on a web such as of paper, comprises insulations (4,5) in the heating channels (2) with variable lengths. The setting unit (8) in the journal flange (3) can slide along the heating channel, coupled to the sliding insulations, and be fixed in place. The insulations each have a longitudinal thermal insulator (4) and a slide (5) which moves in relation to it. The longitudinal thermal insulator is formed by one or more inserts, placed in the heating channel at the end of the roller body without sliding. The insert has a variable length, forming an insulating zone where the heating fluid does not flow through. The thermal insulating zone can have an inlet or outlet at a heating fluid feed (2a) to extend it towards the end of the roller body. Through the operation of the sliding unit, the insulator forms an insulating zone (7) with a length adjusted by the movement of the sliding unit. The fixed insulation insert is of a thermal insulation material, such as a ceramic. The insulators can be formed by bellows. The sliding setting unit is a rod, fed in a straight line through a holding drilling in the journal flange, and its setting can be registered by its projection from the drilling. It can also be fixed in the journal flange drilling, and have a setting spindle which rotates in the drilling to move the slide. The holder drillings in the journal flange open into a common expanded zone in the flange to accommodate the spindle drive wheels and a transmission, to move all the spindles together. The expanded zone at the journal flange is shrouded by a sealing cover with preferably one opening in it for an inserted rotating unit for a setting spindle, and which can be closed by a sealing stopper.
