Methods of locating rail vehicles on track networks have proved to be deficient in that, during satellite location no reliable location of parallel-positioned tracks is given, and it cannot be determined whether a vehicle is located on a given track, or not, and to provide an accurate location, it is necessary to combine the satellite location (GPS) method (8) with at least one further method of reference location and with speed- and track-measurements (10).
