A pattern detector (10) comprising a prism (12) having a contact face (12a) brought into contact with the surface of an object and an exit face (12c) forming an angle of 59 DEG with the contact face (12a), a fiber optical part (13) having an incident face (13b) and an exit face (13c) parallel with each other and forming an angle of 66 DEG with the optical axis, a fiber optical part (14) having an incident face (14b) forming an angle of 31 DEG with the optical axis and an exit face (14c) forming an angle of 90 DEG with the optical axis, a CCD (16), and a light source section (18) for directing parallel light to the contact face (12a) from the inside of the prism (12), wherein the angle between the direction in which reflected light travels from the contact face (12a) and the optical axis of the fiber optical part (13) and the angle between the optical axis of the fiber optical part (13) and the optical axis of the fiber optical part (14) are smaller than the angle between the direction in which reflected light travels and the optical axis of the fiber optical part (14).
