Catalyst for oxidation of aromatic hydrocarbons to aromatic carboxylic acids is combination of group IIIa-IVa metal cpd. and Co (cpd) in 1-100:100 ratio, referred to metal. Results are more satisfactory than when usual catalyst systems are used. Esp., for terephthalic acid manufacture. Suitable group IIIa-IVa metal cpds. with invariable valency are salts of (in)organic acids, (hydr)oxides, basic salts, complex salts or alcoholates. Co can be used as metal, organic acid salt, (hydr)oxide or complex cpd. Pref. ratio of metals is 5-50:100. (Basic) acetates or oxides of Mg, Cu, Sr, Zn, Cd, Hg, Al, Pb, Ge, Sn, Ta, Sb, Bi, Ag, Ni, Fe, Rb, Cs, Be, Ti, Ga, B, Si, Se, W, Mn or Pt or NH4 salts of organic acids can be added. Catalyst should contain not 0.05, pref. not 0.1 g. atom Co/Mol. oxidisable starting material. Aromatic hydrocarbons with CH3, HOCH2 or aldehyde substituent(s) are oxidised at 50-150 deg.C and not >200 kg/cm2 using 1-1000 Mol O2/Mol. starting material.
|
