The barrier for the edge of a conveyor belt has a mounting plate with an inverted L-shape. The vertical section (36) has regularly-spaced slots which extend across most of its height and into the shorter arm (46). The plate is mounted in a rectangular elastomeric block (32). The inner face (52) of this has parallel ribs (58) with the same spacing as the slots which are slightly wider than the slots, but whose breadth is less than that of the slots in the shorter arm. When the ribs fit into the slots in the shorter arm and are squeezed into those in the longer arm the plate is suspended with a predetermined frictional force.
