The burner has at least two groups (a,b) of burner lances (3), each with a gas distribution pipe (1) having a magnet valve (G1,G2). The gas distribution pipe has two chambers (7,8) with separate pipe sections (9,10) having magnet valves. An ignition electrode (5) and an ionisation electrode (12) are arranged in one group (a) of burner lances. When there is a heat requirement, the magnet valve for this group is opened, the ignition electrode ignites the gas and the ionisation electrode operates the ignition at an automatic control (13), which opens the magnet valve for the second group of burner lances. The magnet valves are operated simultaneously in stages or modulated.
