An improved roller clutch (10) comprising an inner race (12), an outer race (14), a bearing cage (16), a plurality of bearings (18), an actuable means (20) for the direct and/or indirect actuable engagement of the one or more bearings (18) and/or the bearing cage (16) with the inner and/or outer races (12, 14) and a control means (21, 24, 26). The bearings (18) are rotatably retained by the bearing cage (16) which is interposed between the inner (12) and the outer (14) races. The inner (12) and outer (14) races normally rotate independently about the bearings (18), wherein the degree of direct or indirect engagement of the bearings (18) and/or the bearing cage (16) with the inner or outer races (12, 14) by way of the actuable means (20) is controlled by the control means (21, 24, 26).
