The invention relates to an individualization system (100) for an article (20), especially a workpiece. Said system comprises a data acquisition device (1) for acquiring individualization data (22, 23) that characterize the article (20), and a comparative device (2) for comparing the individualization data (22, 23) acquired by the data acquisition device (1) with storage data that can be stored beforehand. A material treating device (7) is used to apply an identification mark (22) to the article (20). The inventive system enables a secure individualization that is not only passive, i.e. perceptive, but also active.
