Ziegler catalyst for polymerization of a 2-12 carbon 1-olefin is obtained by reacting (a) the reaction product of a transition metal compound with a gelatinous dispersion (A) and (b) an organometallic compound, in which (A) is prepared by suspending dry-milled magnesium alcoholate of particle size less than 15 mu m in an inert hydrocarbon, in which it is insoluble, using a stirrer or high-power shear tool. Ziegler catalyst for polymerization of a 2-12 carbon 1-olefin (I) is obtained by reacting (a) a specified reaction product (III) and (b) an organometallic compound (IV), in which (III) is prepared by reacting a titanium, zirconium, vanadium or chromium compound (V) with a gelatinous dispersion of the magnesium alcoholate (VI) in an inert hydrocarbon (VII). The novelty is that the gelatinous (VI) dispersion is prepared from (VI) powder with an average particle size, d50, less than 15 mu m, obtained by dry milling (VI) powder, with d50 /- 15 mu m, preferably 100-1000 mu m, in an inertized mill, by suspending the (VI) powder in (VII), in which the (VI) particles are insoluble, by stirring with a stirrer or shearing with a high-power shear tool. The 1-olefin (I) is of the formula; R<4> = hydrogen (H) or 1-10 carbon (C) alkyl . An Independent claim is also included for the production of a poly-1-olefin by polymerization of (I) in suspension, solution or the gas phase at 20-200 deg C and 0.5-50 bar in the presence of a catalyst produced in this way.
