Dye liquor is applied to a travelling web of pile fabric 6 as a film 3' from a rotating screen cylinder 1 by the action of a pair of squeegees forming a nip through which the cylinder passes. A plurality of films may be applied using a single cylinder and a plurality of spaced pairs of squeegees. The driving means for the web and cylinder may be coupled. As shown, the liquor is supplied to the nip from a supply pipe 2 and the squeegees are in the form of magnetically attracted rolls 4 and 5. The cylinder may be lowered so that roll 5 touches the web which may be supported by a roll 7. Alternatively, one (Fig. 4 or 5) or both (Fig. 3) squeegee rolls may be replaced by a blade; and the liquor may be applied to the upper inside wall of the cylinder from an applicator roll (Fig. 6).
